How to Prevent Tire Blowouts

Since a tire blowout can have such serious consequences, how can we prevent it from happening? Below, we’ve outlined several measures to help avoid tire blowouts, which we believe will contribute to keeping your vehicle safe throughout the summer.
(1) First and foremost, please note that tire blowouts can occur at any time of year, not just in summer. If tire pressure is too low or too high, or if the tread is excessively worn to the point of nearing replacement, your tires may still burst—even on a cold, snowy winter day. Therefore, preventing tire blowouts begins with regular, routine maintenance.
(2) Regularly inspecting your tires can help prevent blowouts. In particular, make sure the tire pressure is within the recommended range—neither too high nor too low.
(3) Regularly remove stones or foreign objects lodged in the tread grooves to prevent deformation of the tire crown. Inspect the tire sidewalls for cuts, punctures, or exposed cord; if any are present, replace the tire promptly.
(4) Vehicles that frequently travel on highways should have their tires rotated on a regular basis. For information on the timing, methods, and related knowledge of tire rotation, please refer to the “Tire Talk” column in the May 2005 issue of this magazine’s automotive section.
(5) While driving on the highway, drivers should keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel, avoid driving over foreign objects (such as stones, bricks, and wooden blocks), and steer clear of deep potholes that may suddenly appear at high speeds.
(6) All tires should be used within their specified service life (for passenger car tires, this is typically 2–3 years or approximately 60,000 km). Tires that have exceeded their service life or are severely worn should be replaced promptly with new ones.
(7) On scorching summer days, if you need to park your vehicle for an extended period, it’s best to leave it in a shaded area to prevent the tires from being exposed to direct sunlight.
(8) Have you noticed that many specialized tire shops and automotive repair services now offer nitrogen‑inflation as a service? If your tires are filled with nitrogen, it not only extends their lifespan but also helps maintain stable tire pressure over time, reduces the risk of blowouts, and enhances driving safety.
